What are Mediastinal Cysts and Tumors?

Mediastinum masses may occur as cysts or tumors, as there are many different tissues in the mediastinum. Their origins can differ due to the variety of textures.

Cysts seen in the mediastinum are very diverse. Fluid-filled cysts are generally benign. Cystic formations cause complaints in the patient only when they create strong pressure on the surrounding tissue.

Cysts according to their origin;

Bronchogenic

Thymic

Pericardial

It can be shaped like esophageal cysts.

Some of the mediastinal tumors are benign, some are malignant as in the cyst. As the surrounding tissue, the trachea or vein create clinical signs by compressing the nerve packs.

The most common mediastinal tumors are;

Thymoma

Lymphoma

They are nerve sheath tumors.

In addition to these tumor types;

Germ cell tumors

Thymic carcinoids and carcinomas

Teratoma

Hamartom

Tumors such as neuroblastoma can be seen.

In some patients, sarcoidosis disease may also involve the mediastinum.
